WHAT HAPPENS

Trace Evans dies taking a bullet for his wife's lover, then awakens as an Ash Angel after his ashes are scattered where he fell. Reborn with a new body, divine gifts, and the name Helo, he is pulled into the Ash Angel Organization's war against Dreads, Ghostpackers, and Shedim. Cassandra trains him fast because the war is already going badly: the Ash Angels are being outmaneuvered and killed by an enemy that seems to know their moves. Trace/Helo's first book is as much about trauma as combat; his new life gives him purpose, but it does not erase the humiliation, betrayal, and damage of the life he died in. By the end, Helo has helped strike back against a major Dread threat on the Tempest, but the victory is not clean peace. The enemy structure remains, and the next book begins with the consequences coming for him personally.

KEY EVENTS
  • Trace sacrifices himself and is reborn as an Ash Angel.
  • Cassandra introduces him to the rules, weapons, bureaucracy, and violence of the Ash Angel Organization.
  • The book establishes Dreads as corrupted opposites to Ash Angels and Shedim as atrocity-born threats.
  • Trace/Helo is pushed into active war before he has time to become comfortable with his new powers.
  • The Ash Angels discover that the Dreads are no longer behaving like a contained enemy.
  • Helo's personal wounds from his former life keep surfacing inside the supernatural war.
CHARACTERS ALIVE AT END
Helo continues as an Ash Angel., Cassandra remains central to his training and survival., The Ash Angel Organization survives but is under serious pressure., The Dreads remain active despite the first book's victory.
New or important characters
  • Trace Evans / Helo - sacrificially killed man reborn as an Ash Angel and thrown into war.
  • Cassandra - Helo's sharp-edged trainer and early guide to Ash Angel life.
  • The Ash Angel Organization - the structured force fighting Dreads and related supernatural threats.
  • Dreads - dark counterparts to Ash Angels, tied to murder and evil rather than sacrifice.
  • Ghostpackers - one of the hostile supernatural threats Helo has to learn to fight.
  • Shedim - powerful evil beings connected to atrocity energy.
Deaths or removals
  • Trace Evans' mortal life ends when he takes the bullet that leads to his Ash Angel awakening.
Ending state
  • Helo has survived his first major test and helped defeat King on the Tempest, but the conflict is still open and the next book's setup makes clear that revenge and the remaining Dread leadership are coming.
Still unresolved
  • The wider Dread uprising is not finished.
  • Helo has not fully dealt with the trauma and betrayal from his human life.
  • The Ash Angels still need to understand why the enemy suddenly has the upper hand.
  • The remaining Dread leadership and the cost of crossing them carry into book two.
